“después de la tormenta, siempre llega la calma,”

June 13, 2012

Every night that I crawl into bed (covered by my mosquito net), I get nostalgic about my childhood. After I get ready for bed, I let my mosquito net drape down and I go through the perimeter of my bed and tuck in the loose corners. Usually, I lift up ¾ of the net in the morning (like seen on fb) so that I can make my bed/use my bed to sit down or put stuff down. I turn my head lamp on and throw it inside the draped bed, I turn off the light in my room (the switch is by my door), and then I crawl into my little mosquito net-fort. It makes me feel like a kid all over again. When I was younger, my brother and I use to take all the sheets and blankets in the house and make a fort by draping the sheets over the chairs/dinning table and pretty much anything that would hold the sheets up. I feel 8 years old again. I feel like little Wendy, hanging out in my make-shift fort/tent, day dreaming about adventure and childhood games. It’s kind of a calming and soothing feeling.
Reminiscing about my childhood always me feel good. We didn’t grow up with much, but we were happy. Random thoughts, but I just felt compelled to share….

So, tonight as I was eating dinner with my family, my Mãe was talking about a volunteer that she hosted before me, who is actually about to finish his service and return to the U.S. She kept repeating something along the lines of “I don’t know where the time went. Time goes by sooo fast. It feels like Charles was just here yesterday! Yesterday!” I thought her observations were interesting, because (as many of you know) I am always thinking about time. Well, more like obsessing about time. I don’t know what it is about me that makes me break down, analyze, and plan every detail of my life. Ok, maybe not every detail. I don’t have THAT much energy. But, I don’t know. It’s hard for me to conceptualize that it’s already been two years since I graduated college. When I think about my service, 27 months seems like a long time…especially a long time to be away. But in the grand scheme of things, I know it’s NOT that long. I know that down the line I will be reminiscing about the years I spent living and working in Africa. This will one day be a distant memory, and its this realization that makes me want to take in every moment as it comes and enjoy it. Or hate it. Whatever. I just want to live in the moment and not spend my time obsessing about the future and the what -ifs.
